Chronology of the Municipal Archives Schaffhausen



1831


Separation of the City and State of Schaffhausen.
1832 Bernhard Freuler, painter (1796 – 1858) is elected first registrar and archivist.
1833 Setup of the municipal archives in the former vestry of the church St. Johann.
1862 Acquisition of medieval account-books and tax-registers.
1866 The first repertory of the archive is drawn up by historian Hans Wilhelm Harder.
1884 The records of the «Bürgergemeinde» are relocated into the mansion Zur Rose.
1913 The city’s librarian Reverend Dr. Carl August Bächtold (1838 – 1921) is elected part-time archivist. The position had been left vacant for decades and after the retirement of Bächtold in 1918 the job was once again assigned to the chancellory.
1918 The most ancient documents and records are temporarily deposited in the archives of the State of Schaffhausen.
1923 The records-center for the files of the municipality is set up in the former wine-cellar of the town-hall.
1956 The former teacher Ernst Steinemann (1888 – 1972) is elected first archivist of the city of Schaffhausen.
1958 The city’s records, that were scattered in five different locations are reunited in today’s premises on the ground floor of the building «Grosses Haus».
1970 Dr. Hans Ulrich Wipf is elected first full-time archivist.
1973 First extension of the archive and setup of the showcases. Start of regular exhibitions.
1980 Second extension of the archive in the basement.
1994 Third extension: installation of a vault for protection of the most valuable documents and records.
1996 Dr. phil. Peter Scheck succeeds Dr. Hans-Ulrich Wipf. Introduction of electronic data processing.
1999 Fourth extension: setup of the basement with compact shelving and cartographic archive.
2000 Start of the archives internet-services.
2006 Project for conservation and internet-presentation of the photographic archives of Schaffhausen press photographers
